Bologna
«I love Bologna; for the youthful failures, errors and blunders that I blithely committed here and am unable to regret. I adore it for the loves and pains, the memory of which are harboured in its neighbourhoods...
...but, most of all, I love it because it is beautiful... Bologna is, indeed, beautiful. The Italians fail to properly appreciate the beauty of Bologna: ardent, fantastic, curvaceous and plastic with its fourteen- and fifteen-century terracotta architecture, with the grace of its loggias, its balconies, gothic mullioned windows with two lights and its ornate mouldings. What a spectacle it must have been in the sixteenth century, all red and gaily painted!» Giosuè Carducci DISCOVERING BOLOGNA The city of Bologna is a well-kept secret, a fascinating and beautiful town that means art, culture, tradition, museums, villas, streets, palazzos, piazzas, churches, abbeys, fortifications and towers: a great place to indulge yourself. Bologna is thousands of years of history. In its intact historical centre it is possible to admire vestiges of important structures from the Roman period, remnants of the original medieval walls that used to surround the city, not to mention the many time-honoured vaults, arches and corbels with hundred of towers you can see leaning from the red roofs when walking across the streets. And because of the its terracotta roofs and its towers Bologna is either known as "la rossa" [the Red] and "la turrita" [the Turreted]. But mostly Bologna is the city of porticos. The kilometres of arcades provide shelters during the rainy winters and incentive socialize and shop beneath their congenial embrace. The native Bolognese love to promenade, meet and chat beneath their porticos where the ancient founders of the Alma Mater Studiorum used to meet and have public discussions. In fact, Bologna "la dotta" [the Erudite] is home to the oldest university in the world, founded in 1088 AD. The presence of the university is quite noticeable, in terms of cultural activities, pubs and night life.Bologna, also named "la grassa" [the Fat lady], is world known for the gastronomy, always ready to remind people the art of eating well as a primary component of the quality of life. Don't leave without tasting the good local wine and delicious traditional dishes such as meat-filled tortellini, tagliatelle with ragu, lasagne, mortadella (a tasty sausage), crescentine and tigelle. To wholly experience Bologna, through art, shopping and gastronomy and take a little souvenir with you we suggest to spend some time in Piazza Maggiore, the central square with its quite life and the marvellous sight of the Nettuno fountain, San Petronio Church and Palazzo del Podestà. Then visit the fascinating streets just off Piazza Maggiore, via Drapperie, Via Clavature, Via Pescherie, Vicolo Ranocchi where you can find small delicatessen old shops. Going along Via Caprarie you'll reach Piazza della Mercanzia with the ancient Gothic palace of the tradesmen, actually head office of the Bolognese Chamber of Commerce; on your left the sight is on the Two Towers (the shorter "Garisenda" and the higher and most known "Asinelli" tower), while in front of you begins the Santo Stefano street that opens on the pretty cobbled square with Santo Stefano church, not one church but seven: a unique, unforgettable scenery!Useful addresses IAT - Turist Information Office Tel. +39 051 24.65.41 http://iat.comune.bologna.it/IAT/IAT.nsf/HomePageE?openpage BOLOGNA CITY COUNCIL Information desk (open on Sunday) Tel. +39 051 20.30.40 www.comune.bologna.it/cultura www.comune.bologna.it Emporio della Cultura [Cultural Shop] Tel. +39 051 296.08.12 Giorgio Morandi Museum Palazzo d'Accursio - Piazza Maggiore, 6 Tel. +39 051 20.33.32 - 051 20.36.46 www.museomorandi.it Council Art Collections Piazza Maggiore, 6 Tel. +39 051 20.35.26 Tel. 051-2193631/2193526 http://www.comune.bologna.it/iperbole/MuseiCivici/museicivici2000ita/collezionicom.htm Emilia Romagna Tourism http://www.emiliaromagnaturismo.it/new/english/index.htm |
